Getting around Penang is relatively easy and affordable, but the best way to travel depends on where you are staying, what you want to see and how much of the island you plan to explore.

Central George Town is compact enough to explore on foot, while the free CAT Bus and Grab make travelling around the wider heritage area easy. Rapid Penang buses provide an inexpensive way to reach attractions farther across the island, while hiring a scooter or motorbike offers greater flexibility for confident and experienced riders.

During our stay, we used a combination of walking, Grab, public buses and scooter hire. Each option served a different purpose, and we found that combining them was the easiest way to experience both George Town and the wider island.

Which Transport Option Is Best?

Best for exploring George Town: Walking
Walking allows you to discover the street art, heritage buildings, temples, markets, cafés and hidden laneways that make George Town so interesting. It is free and flexible, but Penang’s heat and humidity can make even short distances feel tiring.

Best free option: George Town CAT Bus
The free CAT Bus connects many of the major attractions around central George Town. It is particularly useful when the route aligns with your plans or when you need a break from walking.

Best budget option for exploring farther: Rapid Penang
Rapid Penang buses connect George Town with destinations across the island, including Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple, Batu Ferringhi and Penang International Airport.

Best for convenience: Grab
Grab is widely available, reliable and affordable. It is particularly useful when travelling in the heat, carrying luggage, returning to your accommodation at night or visiting locations that are less convenient to reach by bus.

Best for flexibility: Scooter or motorbike hire
Hiring a scooter or motorbike allows experienced riders to explore Penang independently and travel at their own pace.

Walking Around George Town

Central George Town is relatively flat and one of the most enjoyable areas in Southeast Asia to explore on foot.

Walking allows you to appreciate the details that make its UNESCO World Heritage area so interesting. Colourful street art, historic shophouses, temples, mosques, markets, cafés and hidden laneways are often located only a short distance from one another.

Many of George Town’s major attractions can be grouped together into manageable walking routes. However, distances can feel longer than expected because of Penang’s year-round heat and humidity.

Footpaths and covered five-foot ways are available throughout much of the heritage area, although pedestrian infrastructure can be inconsistent. Some walkways are narrow, uneven or obstructed, and busy road crossings require additional care.

We recommend planning your route before setting out and grouping nearby attractions together rather than repeatedly crossing the city. Carry water, allow time for regular breaks and make use of cafés, shopping centres and indoor attractions when you need to escape the heat.

Starting earlier in the morning or exploring later in the afternoon can also make walking more comfortable.

George Town Free CAT Bus

The George Town CAT Bus, short for Central Area Transit, is a free and convenient way to travel around the city’s heritage precinct.

The service operates a loop between the Jetty Bus Terminal at Weld Quay and KOMTAR, stopping near many of central George Town’s most popular attractions.

The route provides convenient access to areas including:

• Little India
• Beach Street
• Campbell Street
• Chowrasta Market
• KOMTAR
• Fort Cornwallis
• Penang Town Hall
• The Esplanade
• Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal

A complete loop generally takes around 40 minutes, depending on traffic. You can remain onboard to become familiar with the city or use the service for a short trip between attractions.

At the time of our visit, buses operated daily, including public holidays, from approximately 6.00 am until 11.45 pm.

Services generally ran every 10 minutes during the morning and afternoon peak periods and approximately every 15 minutes at other times.

Onboard information screens display upcoming stops and nearby points of interest. Stops are generally by request, so press the stop button before reaching your destination. If waiting at a bus stop, signal to the driver as the bus approaches.

Passengers are required to leave the bus when it returns to the Jetty terminal before boarding the next service. Another CAT Bus is often waiting nearby, making the transfer relatively straightforward.

Traffic around central George Town can become congested, particularly near KOMTAR. During busy periods, walking the final few blocks may be quicker than remaining on the bus.

Rapid Penang Buses

Rapid Penang operates an extensive public bus network connecting George Town with destinations across Penang Island.

Public buses provide an affordable way to reach popular locations outside the central heritage area, including:

• Penang Hill
• Kek Lok Si Temple
• Batu Ferringhi
• Penang International Airport
• The northern beaches
• Other suburbs and attractions across the island

Fares are based on the distance travelled and, at the time of our visit, generally ranged from approximately RM1.40 to RM5.00 per journey.

If paying with cash, check the fare information before boarding and carry the exact amount, as change may not be provided. Keep your ticket until the end of the journey as proof of payment.

Rapid Penang buses are an excellent option for budget-conscious travellers, although journey times can vary depending on traffic. Allow additional time during peak periods and when travelling longer distances across the island.

Using Grab in Penang

Grab is widely available throughout Penang and was one of the easiest and most reliable transport options we used.

It was particularly useful when the heat made walking uncomfortable, when travelling beyond George Town’s heritage area and when returning to our accommodation at night.

Compared with ride-sharing services in Australia, we found Grab extremely affordable. Most of our trips of up to five kilometres cost less than RM12, depending on demand and the time of day.

The highest fare we paid for a similar distance was approximately RM22 during a peak period.

The Grab app displays the fare before you confirm the booking, making it easy to compare the cost and convenience with other transport options.

Grab is likely to be the simplest option for many visitors, particularly couples, families or small groups who can share the fare.

Hiring a Scooter or Motorbike

Hiring a scooter or motorbike gave us greater freedom to explore Penang Island at our own pace.

Numerous rental businesses operate throughout George Town, with prices varying according to the size of the bike and the length of the rental period.

During our stay, we rented from two local operators.

Two Wheel Adventures Bike Rental

Two Wheel Adventures offered a good range of scooters and motorbikes.

The bikes appeared well maintained, and the helmets were clean and in good condition. This was something we appreciated because it has not always been our experience with rental companies during our travels.

The owner, Vincent, communicated clearly, and offered a reduced daily rate for a longer rental period.

We rented a 165cc motorbike for RM50 per day, reduced to RM45 per day for an extended hire.

A RM100 security deposit was required. The motorbike was supplied with a full tank of fuel and needed to be returned full.

NJ Express Service

NJ Express Service had a smaller range of bikes, but this suited us because we only required a small scooter for two days.

Communication through WhatsApp was responsive. Although we experienced some minor language challenges, the team was friendly, professional and helpful.

The scooter was well maintained and suited our needs.

We rented a 125cc scooter for RM35 per day.

A RM100 security deposit was required. The scooter was supplied with a full tank of fuel and needed to be returned full.

Based on our experiences, we would be comfortable recommending either rental company.

Before Hiring a Scooter

Before renting a scooter or motorbike, confirm that your licence is valid for the type of vehicle you intend to ride and that your travel insurance provides appropriate coverage.

Traffic around George Town can be busy and unpredictable, while roads elsewhere on the island may be steep, winding or congested. Scooter hire is best suited to confident and experienced riders.

Before leaving the rental business:

• Inspect the bike and photograph any existing damage.
• Check the tyres, lights and brakes.
• Confirm what fuel level is required when returning the bike.
• Make sure the supplied helmet fits correctly.
• Clarify the rental company’s procedures if the bike breaks down or is damaged.

Getting To and From Penang International Airport

Penang International Airport is located in the southern part of Penang Island, approximately 16 kilometres from central George Town.

Grab is generally the easiest door-to-door option, particularly when travelling with luggage. Travel times can vary considerably depending on traffic, so allow additional time during peak periods.

Rapid Penang buses also connect the airport with George Town and provide a more affordable alternative.

Public transport may suit travellers who are not in a hurry and are comfortable managing their luggage on the bus. If you have several bags, are travelling as a couple or arriving late, the convenience of Grab may justify the additional cost.

When returning to the airport, allow extra travel time because congestion can significantly increase the journey.

Our Experience

For exploring central George Town, we found that walking and Grab provided the easiest combination.

Walking allowed us to discover street art, historic buildings, local cafés and hidden laneways that we may otherwise have missed. When the heat became tiring or we wanted to travel farther, Grab was affordable, reliable and convenient.

The free CAT Bus is a useful option when its route aligns with your plans, while Rapid Penang buses provide an inexpensive way to reach attractions farther across the island.

For greater independence, hiring a scooter allowed us to explore at our own pace and reach places that would have required more planning by public transport.

Our advice is not to rely on a single form of transport.

Penang is easiest to explore by combining walking, buses, Grab and, where appropriate, scooter hire. That flexibility allowed us to experience both the heritage streets of George Town and more of the island beyond the city centre.

Our Verdict

Getting around Penang is affordable, flexible and relatively straightforward once you understand the available options.

George Town is best experienced slowly and on foot, while the free CAT Bus provides a useful alternative when the heat becomes tiring or its route aligns with your plans.

Grab offers the greatest convenience, Rapid Penang provides excellent value for budget-conscious travellers, and scooter hire gives experienced riders the freedom to explore more of the island independently.

There is no single transport option that works best for every journey. Combining several options allowed us to spend less time worrying about transport and more time experiencing what Penang has to offer.
