Gili Meno, Indonesia

June 4, 2026

Gili Meno offers peace, privacy, pristine beaches, turtle encounters, and slow island living for travellers seeking genuine relaxation.

First Impressions

Of the three Gili Islands, Gili Meno is the smallest, quietest, and least developed. After arriving from Gili Air, the difference wasimmediately noticeable. There were fewer tourists, fewer restaurants and cafés,and a slower, more deliberate pace of life.

While some travellers may find the lack of infrastructurelimiting, it was exactly what appealed to us. Gili Meno offered somethingincreasingly difficult to find in popular travel destinations: genuinetranquillity.

This was a place where days were filled with simplepleasures. Snorkelling in crystal-clear water, cycling quiet pathways, strolling along empty beaches, watching the sunset, and allowing ourselves thespace to simply unwind.

If Gili Air felt balanced, Gili Meno felt peaceful.

Getting There

We travelled to Gili Meno from Gili Air using the publicboat service.

Public Boat

·      Travel time: Approximately 10 minutes

·      Cost: Around 40,000 IDR per person(approximately AUD $3.50)

There is also the option of taking a fast boat betweenthe islands, although given the short distance, we the distance we personallycouldn't justify the additional cost.

Visitors can also reach Gili Meno directly via fast ferryservices from:

·      Sanur Harbour, Bali

·      Bangsal Harbour, Lombok

The Vibe

Gili Meno is often referred to as the honeymoon island, and it's easy to understand why.

Life moves slowly here. There are no crowds, no busystreets, and no pressure to fill every hour with activities. The atmospherefeels calm, secluded, and intentionally simple.

Unlike its neighbouring islands, Gili Meno isn't tryingto entertain you. Instead, it encourages you to slow down and appreciate thesurroundings.

For travellers seeking peace and quiet, that is preciselyits appeal.

Things To Do

Snorkelling

Snorkelling is one of the island's main attractions andcan be enjoyed directly from many beaches.

Several vendors rent equipment, while local operatorsoffer dedicated snorkelling trips to nearby turtle hotspots.

BASK Underwater Statues

One of the most photographed attractions in the GiliIslands, the BASK underwater statues sit just offshore and are accessible fromthe beach.

Visibility varies depending on weather conditions andseason.

It's also worth noting that at certain times of yearsmall stinging jellyfish can occasionally be present in the area.

Scuba Diving

Several dive operators offer introductory dives, guidedexperiences, and internationally recognised certification courses.

Turtle Sanctuary

One of our favourite experiences on the island wasvisiting the local turtle sanctuary.

The sanctuary rescues turtle eggs from vulnerable nestingsites and provides a protected environment where hatchlings can safely developbefore being released into the ocean.

Visitors can learn about local conservation efforts andobserve turtles at various stages of development.

Kayaking

Kayaks can be hired from several locations around theisland and provide a relaxing way to explore the coastline.

Beach Walks and Sunset Watching

Sometimes the simplest activities are the most rewarding.

The beaches on Gili Meno are ideal for long walks, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon when the temperatures arecooler. However, certain parts of the islands shoreline mainly consist of whitecoral making it a little rough on your feet. But the water has a perfectturquoise colour.

Sunsets here are spectacular and far less crowded thanthose found on neighbouring islands.

Food & Drink

While Gili Meno offers fewer dining options than Gili Airor Gili Trawangan, there is still a good selection of local warungs, cafés,restaurants, and convenience stores scattered around the island.

One standout experience for us was BASK.

Part luxury resort and part destination restaurant, BASKdelivered one of the best dining experiences we enjoyed during our time in theGili Islands.

The seasonal menu showcased high-quality ingredients, thewine list was exceptional, and the service was outstanding.

What began as lunch quickly became a long and memorableafternoon.

Getting Around

Like the other Gili Islands, there are no motorisedvehicles on Gili Meno.

The island measures just 2 kilometres long and 1kilometre wide, making it incredibly easy to explore on foot. We comfortablywalked around the entire island in under two hours.

Bicycle Hire

·      Around 60,000 IDR per day

·      Approximately AUD $5

Electric Scooter Hire

·      Around 150,000 IDR per day

·      Approximately AUD $12.50

Cycling is a particularly enjoyable way to explore theisland's quiet pathways and hidden corners.

On the western side of the island, you'll also find asaltwater lake and mangrove forest.

A narrow boardwalk winds through the area, althoughvisitors should take care as parts of it are showing their age.

The mangroves are home to a variety of birdlife, largemonitor lizards, and plenty of mosquitoes. While we didn't encounter oneourselves, locals advised that large pythons are occasionally spotted aroundthe lake and mangrove areas.

Where To Stay

We stayed at MenoMojo Beach Resort, located approximately 500 metres from the harbour on theeastern side of the island.

The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable, eachfeaturing a small veranda overlooking the beach and neighbouring Gili Air.

Fresh drinking water was provided daily and there was anonsite restaurant for added convenience.

One thing worth noting is that many accommodations onGili Meno use saltwater showers.

While this is common across the island, regular soapoften struggles to lather effectively. If you're planning an extended stay, itmay be worth bringing saltwater-compatible toiletries.

We also found the eastern side of the island offeredcalmer waters and less wind compared to the western coastline.

What We Loved

We loved the sense of peace that Gili Meno provided.

There were no schedules to keep, no crowds to navigate, and no pressure to constantly be doing something.

It was simply a place to slow down, reset, and enjoy thenatural beauty of island life.

What We'd Do Differently

Honestly, not much.

Our experience matched exactly what we were looking for,and we wouldn't significantly change anything about our visit.

How Long To Stay

We spent four nights on Gili Meno and found this was theperfect amount of time to explore the island, enjoy the water activities, andfully embrace its slower pace.

If relaxation is your primary goal and Gili Meno is yourmain destination, five to six nights would also work well.

Beyond that, most travellers may begin to run out ofthings to do unless complete relaxation is the objective.

Our Verdict

Score: 8/10

If Gili Air is about balance and Gili Trawangan isabout energy, Gili Meno is about stillness.

It won't suit travellers looking for nightlife, endless dining options, or packed itineraries. What it offers instead issomething increasingly rare in modern travel: genuine peace and quiet.

For us, Gili Meno was less about what we did and moreabout how it made us feel.
